When Jesus told Peter, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19), He wasn’t just being poetic; He was giving believers supernatural power. This deep truth is still one of the most powerful but least understood ideas in prayer and spiritual warfare.
Revelation is the basis for this power. In Matthew 16, Peter receives heavenly revelation regarding who Christ is. Only after that does Jesus give him the keys to the kingdom. This pattern persists for each believer. When God gives us spiritual revelation, we get kingdom keys, which are spiritual powers that let us change things in both the natural and spiritual worlds. It’s important to know this order: revelation comes before authority.
What does it really mean to “bind” and “loose”? To bind something means to hold it back, forbid it, or limit it. To loose something means to let it go, allow it, or set it free. This isn’t some kind of spiritual magic or trickery; it’s just agreeing with what God has already decided. When we pray with this knowledge, we’re not forcing our wishes on heaven; instead, we’re bringing earth into line with what heaven has already said.
What can believers tie up? We have power over demons first and foremost. Luke 10:19 says clearly, “Look, I give you power over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will hurt you.” The original Greek shows an essential difference: Jesus grants us “exousia” (authority) over all the “dunamis” (power/strength) of the enemy. This signifies that the power we have from God is stronger than the enemy’s! We can also bind strongholds of sin, addiction, fear, generational curses, and oppressive thought patterns that exalt themselves against God’s truth (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
We can also loose God’s blessings, healing, deliverance, and breakthroughs in situations, which is just as powerful. When Jesus saw the lady who had been bent over for eighteen years, He didn’t just pray for her in general; He said, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity” (Luke 13:12). We have the same power to set people free from sickness, oppression, and bondage. We can loose the blessings, favor, provision, and the full life that Jesus promised in John 10:10. We can even help others find their divine calling and purpose. This is shown in Acts 13:2-3, when the Holy Spirit told the church to separate Barnabas and Saul for ministry.
The power of binding and losing doesn’t depend on how many prayers we say or how strong our feelings are. Instead, it depends on how well we follow God’s word and will. What we say must be in line with what the Bible says. This is why it’s important to know the Bible well for spiritual warfare: we can’t agree with something we don’t know.
When you pray to bind and loose, you need to be simple and have trust. You could say, “Father, thank You for giving me the keys to the kingdom.” I bind whatever Satan does to hurt my life, my family, my health, and my future. I bind spirits that make people afraid, confused, unwell, and pass down bad habits. “They shall not prevail in my life.” You can also loose God’s blessings: “I loose the peace of God, the joy of the Lord, healing, deliverance, and a breakthrough in my life and family.” I loose the favor and the full life that Jesus promised.
Your authority doesn’t come from how well you do things or how perfect you are. It comes from Christ’s finished work and your place in Him. The enemy tries to keep you from knowing about this great power so that you stay stuck while your tools for freedom stay unused. Don’t let him win. Start using the authority God gave you today by praying binding and loosing prayers that are in line with the Word. You’ll see how God’s power changes your life from the inside out.
